The Removal of Restraints in the End Times (KJV Perspective)
Introduction
The King James Bible presents a clear picture of the end times as an era in which God’s restraints on human and demonic evil are gradually removed. This results in widespread lawlessness, deception, violence, and a collapse of the moral and social "brakes" that once held back chaos. This article explores key passages demonstrating how, in the last days, God allows the world to experience the full consequences of its rebellion.
The Restrainer Taken Away
The clearest teaching of a restraint being lifted is found in 2 Thessalonians:
2 Thessalonians 2:6-8 (KJV):
- And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
- For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
- And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
This "restrainer" ("he who now letteth") is understood by many to refer to the Holy Spirit or God’s general order and moral law. When this restraint is "taken out of the way," the Antichrist ("that Wicked") is revealed, and evil is unleashed without hindrance.
As in the Days of Noah and Lot
Jesus Christ compared the end times to the days of Noah and Lot:
Luke 17:26-30 (KJV):
- And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
- ... Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.
Genesis 6:5 (KJV):
- And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
In both eras, moral restraint was lost—people lived for pleasure, violence, and evil, ignoring God’s warnings.
God "Gives Them Over"
Romans 1 reveals a process where, after persistent rejection of God, He gives people up to their own sinful desires:
Romans 1:24, 26, 28 (KJV):
- Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness...
- For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections...
- And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind...
A "reprobate mind" is a mind without the moral ability to discern or restrain evil.
The Loosing of Spiritual Restraints in Revelation
The Book of Revelation uses the imagery of angels holding back destruction and then being commanded to release it:
Revelation 7:1 (KJV):
- And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth...
Revelation 9:14-15 (KJV):
- ...Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. And the four angels were loosed...
These acts symbolize the deliberate removal of barriers to destruction and judgment.
Perilous Times and the Collapse of Self-Control
Paul prophesied the moral condition of the last days:
2 Timothy 3:1-5 (KJV):
- This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
- For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers...
- Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good...
The term "incontinent" means without self-control, a loss of inner restraint.
Conclusion
The King James Bible presents the end times as a unique era of unleashed evil, when God’s restraints are withdrawn, both spiritually and morally. What remains is a world marked by chaos, lawlessness, deception, and judgment—the direct result of humanity rejecting the truth and the restraining influence of God.
