Sam Altman’s “Merge” and the Prophecy of the Mark in the Forehead
Overview
In 2017, Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, published a blog post titled The Merge, in which he argued that the blending of human cognition with artificial intelligence was both inevitable and necessary for humanity’s survival. In August 2025, Altman announced his involvement in launching Merge Labs, a brain–computer interface (BCI) company positioned as a competitor to Elon Musk’s Neuralink. Merge Labs seeks to create high-bandwidth links between the human brain and AI systems, potentially enabling seamless thought-to-machine interaction.
The 2017 “The Merge” Essay
In The Merge, Altman wrote that humanity was already in the early stages of merging with AI through smartphones, social media, and search engines. He suggested that humans act as a “biological bootloader” for digital intelligence, and that a deeper integration would be the best path forward in an AI-dominated future.
Merge Labs (2025)
Merge Labs builds directly on Altman’s earlier philosophical vision:
- Launch Date: August 12, 2025
- Funding: Seeking approximately $250 million at an $850 million valuation
- Leadership: Co-founded by Altman, led by Alex Blania
- Goal: Develop BCIs that connect human thought directly to AI systems
Connection to Revelation 13:16–17 (KJV)
Revelation 13:16–17 states:
And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark...
From a prophetic perspective, Merge Labs’ technology aligns with several elements of this passage:
- Forehead location: BCIs operate in or near the brain region — symbolically and physically connected to the forehead.
- Control of thought and decision-making: Direct neural interfaces could influence or control mental processes.
- Integration into commerce: When paired with digital IDs, AI governance, or payment systems, such technology could control the ability to buy or sell.
Prophetic Interpretation
While Altman is not known to hold religious views regarding Bible prophecy, the development of Merge Labs can be seen as a step toward fulfilling the conditions described in Revelation 13. In biblical precedent, individuals can fulfill prophecy without personal awareness, as seen in the example of Cyrus in Isaiah 45.
