Living By Faith in the Last Days: Fleeing the Cities and Trusting God

Introduction

As we approach the climax of the age, with signs of the end times manifesting in social, economic, and spiritual upheaval, believers are faced with a growing demand to live by faith and not by sight. The Word of God has much to say about faith, judgment, and the spiritual dangers of city life, especially in the last days. This exposition explores why living by faith is now essential, why cities are repeatedly targets of God’s judgment, and how the believer should respond.

The Just Shall Live by Faith

Scripture emphasizes the necessity of faith for God’s people, especially in times of crisis.

Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
— Habakkuk 2:4

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
— Romans 1:17

Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
— Hebrews 10:38

Faith is not just mental assent or occasional trust—it is a daily walk of dependence on God, especially as the world grows more hostile and deceptive.

Why Cities Are Targets of Judgment

Throughout the Bible, cities are often seen as centers of pride, wickedness, and rebellion. From Babel to Babylon, Sodom to Jerusalem, when a city fills up the measure of its sin, God’s judgment falls.

And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them... Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!

Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit...

Cities concentrate power, pride, and sin. In the last days, the world’s system is pictured as a great city—Mystery Babylon—whose destruction is sudden and final.

A Call to Separate and Flee

God’s people are repeatedly warned to separate from the world’s system, especially as judgment approaches.

And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve... but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

Physical flight from danger, such as leaving the cities, is not a lack of faith—but an act of obedience when God gives warning.

Judgment Begins, But Faith Preserves

Jesus warned that judgment and distress would fall upon the cities in the last days:

But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles...

Then let them which be in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

Judgment often begins in the most prideful and wicked places—yet God makes a way of escape for those who trust Him.

Faith as the Only Security

The systems of the world—financial, technological, political—are all being shaken. Those who trust in these systems will be disappointed. Only faith in Jesus Christ will stand in the days to come.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
— Proverbs 18:10

Conclusion

As the end of the age draws near and judgment looms over the cities and the world system, God calls His people to walk by faith and not by sight. This may mean literal separation from places of coming judgment, or spiritual separation from the world’s ways. In either case, those who live by faith—trusting in the Lord, not in the arm of flesh—will be preserved.

Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
