A Free Grace Perspective on False Prophets Who Require Persecution for Salvation
From a Free Grace perspective, any claim that a person is not saved unless they are persecuted is a false gospel and should be rejected. The Bible teaches that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9). Adding any requirement, such as persecution, endurance, or suffering, distorts the simplicity of the Gospel and turns it into a works-based system.
Salvation by Grace Through Faith
The foundation of biblical salvation is faith in Jesus Christ, apart from works or personal suffering.
- Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV) — For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
- Acts 16:30-31 (KJV) — And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
These passages make it clear that salvation is a gift received by faith—not something that requires suffering or persecution to secure.
Persecution as a Consequence, Not a Requirement
While the Bible does teach that persecution is expected for those who live godly in Christ Jesus, it never states that suffering is necessary for salvation.
- 2 Timothy 3:12 (KJV) — Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
- John 15:18-20 (KJV) — If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
These verses affirm that persecution is a natural outcome of living faithfully for Christ. However, it is not a prerequisite for salvation. Not all believers experience severe persecution—some may face minor opposition, while others live in relatively free societies.
A False Gospel: Adding Persecution as a Requirement
The Apostle Paul warned against false gospels that add extra conditions to faith in Christ.
- Galatians 1:8-9 (KJV) — But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
A gospel that requires persecution as a condition of salvation is an addition to the true gospel, making it a false gospel.
False Prophets and Distorted Teaching
Those who preach that one must suffer persecution to be saved fit the description of false prophets because they impose unbiblical requirements on believers.
- Matthew 7:15 (KJV) — Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
By making persecution a test of salvation, these teachers shift the focus from faith in Christ to human suffering, thus undermining the message of grace.
Conclusion
From a Free Grace perspective, claiming that one is not saved unless they are persecuted is a false teaching. Salvation is based on faith in Jesus Christ alone. While persecution may come as a result of faithful living, it is not a condition for eternal life. Those who insist on such an unbiblical requirement are teaching a false gospel and should be rejected according to Scripture.
