Creeping Totalitarian Thinking Rising in the USA

The United States is witnessing a dangerous shift towards totalitarian thinking, where speech is being criminalized based on political convenience. Both political factions—left and right—are now engaging in weaponizing the legal system against their opponents, leading to a dangerous erosion of free speech and due process.

The Garcia Controversy: Selective Outrage Over Speech

One of the latest examples of this authoritarian shift involves Representative Robert Garcia, who recently made a statement during a political discussion, saying:

"We have to bring actual weapons to this bar fight."

Mike Adams, a conservative commentator, interpreted this as a direct incitement to violence and called for Garcia’s criminal prosecution. However, a closer examination suggests that Garcia was using a political metaphor, a common rhetorical device employed by politicians on both sides.

If Garcia’s statement is grounds for criminal charges, then so are statements made by numerous politicians, including:

- Maxine Waters (2021): Called for increased confrontation against Trump officials.

- Chuck Schumer (2020): Threatened Supreme Court Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, saying "You will pay the price!"

- Donald Trump (Jan 6, 2021): Told his supporters to "fight like hell", which was later used as justification for his second impeachment.

None of these statements led to criminal charges, yet Garcia’s comment is now being framed as a prosecutable offense by some on the right. This double standard is a clear indication that free speech is no longer being protected as a universal right, but rather as a political weapon.

J6 and the Criminalization of Political Opposition

This situation mirrors the totalitarian treatment of January 6 protesters. While some demonstrators engaged in unlawful behavior, many peaceful attendees were swept up in mass arrests, facing disproportionate punishments. This weaponization of the justice system is reminiscent of:

- Nazi Germany, where Hitler’s regime imprisoned political dissenters under vague laws.

- Soviet Russia, where the government labeled opposition speech as a threat to national security.

- Modern authoritarian states, where those who challenge the ruling class face arrests, exile, or worse.

The criminalization of speech by both the left and the right is a sign that America is moving toward a dangerous precedent—where political opponents are not merely debated, but persecuted through legal means.

The Growing Pattern of Authoritarianism

The Garcia controversy, the J6 prosecutions, and the silencing of dissenting voices in tech, media, and government all point to a growing totalitarian mentality in America. Instead of respecting free speech, both sides are now using selective outrage to justify suppressing their opposition.

This is not a problem of one political party—it is a systemic issue. The fact that each side now seeks to arrest the other over speech rather than engage in open debate proves that America is abandoning its core principles of free expression and due process.

The Path Forward

To restore true liberty, Americans must reject this authoritarian game and demand:

1. Equal application of the law—No selective prosecutions based on political affiliation.

2. Restoration of free speech protections—No more criminalizing speech unless it directly incites violence.

3. An end to political weaponization of the justice system—Both sides must be held to the same standard.

The dangerous precedent being set today will not stop with one side—eventually, everyone becomes a target. History proves that when a government criminalizes speech, it does not stop with its enemies—it eventually turns on its own.

It is time to reject creeping totalitarianism before it becomes the norm.
